Amazon.comCasella (1883-1947) was an Italian composer, pianist, and conductor who led the Boston Pops for three seasons just before Arthur Fiedler took over in 1929. He was a composer of great wit, and sometimes of real substance. This well-played disc might not be very useful for those who already know Casella's music, since the Serenata (once available on a horribly played Urania LP) is an arrangement from a chamber work, the Concerto an orchestrated string quartet, and the Divertimento comes from a ballet based on children's piano music. Perhaps you'll want to try Naxos's splendid CD of Casella's piano music first. But this disc definitely has its charms. --Leslie Gerber
