CD Reviews

Unusual but nevertheless recommendable

"A very British Musical written by a very American composer. It is perhaps the most unusual Musical ever written by Charles Strouse. The Songs are obviously not as catchy as for instance the songs of Annie or Rags but there are some songs in this Musical listening to whom I enjoyed very much as for example the title song ore "Just you and Me". The score resembles a little bit the Strouse-opera "Nightingale" although "I and Albert" is more melodic. Do not expect to listen to a brassy 60s-Musical(the way Charles Strouse normally writes)but rather to a show that needs listening to more than once in order to get to like it. At any rate it is a must-have for any Charles Strouse fans!"

"Who would have imagined that the score to a London flop written by, of all people, Strouse and Adams could provide so much pleasure? I can't say enough good things about this flavorsome, witty, unusual, imaginative score, nor about the lovely performances of the Victoria and the Albert, nor about the sly, occasionally rollicking, and always appropriate orchestration. My only quibble is that the recording (or is it the score?) isn't any longer. Surely Victoria's long life might have kicked off a few more songs. But musical theater fans desperate to hear something wonderful they've never heard before should pounce on this one."
