Synopsis

Album Description
Recorded live during January?March 1994 at Kammermusiksaal der Philharmonie, Berlin. Alan Marks performs a four concert cycle of the completed Schubert piano sonatas, whose highly acclaimed sense of drama and poetic beauty can now be experienced on these live recordings. This concert cycle contains Schubert?s two completed movements from the "Reliquie" Sonata torso (D.840). Alan Marks was born in Chicago and studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York under Irwin Freundlich. He has made several successful albums for Nimbus and other labels. This set offers more than six hours of the sublime keyboard music of Franz Schubert, at a special price. Neglected for a century or more, Schubert?s piano sonatas were once regularly described as wandering and unstructured, or, more politely, "discursive"; today that opinion has largely disappeared and critics see these works as vast canvasses of profound contemplation and deep inner feeling.
