"This is a marvelous field recording by Lomax. Lomax describes the anthem technique, which is used in chanteys as well, as: "The several parts are likely not only to have different tonal levels, rhythmic patterns, and distinctive melodic patterns, but be proceeding at different speeds". The result is a very sophisticated folk sound."Blow, Liza, Blow" is a wonderful interweaving of voices in anthem style."Histe Up the John B. Sail" is more similar to the version sung during the American "folk revival" of the sixties."All Night, Jesus, All Night" is an interesting contrast to the southern US spiritual/gospel tradition.Listen to any of the clips available on Amazon - multiply by 6 or so and you get your enjoyment level for this wonderful album."
