CD Reviews

Mellow, slow, intricate, dancing mediation...
Guardian of the Zen Sea | Looking after the sun and surf | 02/17/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD is reminiscent of an earlier work "Space Hotel". If you are familiar with that one, you'll undersatnd how something can be mellow, slow, meditative, yet almost hypnotically dance-like. Al Gromer Khan is a German-born sitar master, whose style is described as "Paisley Music". His usual music is a combination of tradtional Indian melodies with ambient electronic keyboards. This CD, and Space Hotel, really focus on the ambient portion of that description. For example, track numer 7 is listed as "Ya Aziz (Ambient-Adagio-Alap)". This CD is elegant. The music, as the artist says, "derives from and aims at certain inner states". This is profoundly interior music which, through its understated melodies and intricate sound, really does offer a trance-like experience. Take time out and go with this music. Soothe your soul."
A unique fusion.

"I own most all of Kahn's recordings and found this a most unique recording. A definate must listen for early Steve Roach (Western Spaces) fans, "Mahogany Nights" fans as well as Brian Eno fans. The textures are all there in their various forms with Kahn's own perspective. Other reviewers tend to focus on the more melodic beat orientated Kahn, such as Space Hotel, don't expect that here, this is smooth space music riding to tribal, ambient and beyondOh well I enjoy it"
Excellent but....

"After listening to Space Hotel, Sufi might strike one as a below par & unaccomplished. But one has to bear in mind that each album is and should be different, reflecting the artists moods and whether he can convey them to the listener.

I think Space Hotel is monumental but Sufi is a very good album too in its own right, ambiently darker than space hotel but none the less still enables to cut the surface to deliver its mysterious ecstasy."
