"There are a lot of "Beatles interpretation" albums in every genre of music, and to my ears they tend to be bland and soporific. The intense familiarity most people have with Lennon/McCartney melodies makes every instrumental version into muzak.
"Golden Slumbers - Best of Hyper Music" is not that kind of album. Aki Takahashi performs the works of contemporary composers who have taken Beatle harmonic and melodic materials and recontextualized them. The result is a decidedly avant garde piano montage with only fleeting moments of beatlemuzak. Besides being the only place to hear a performance of John Cage's 'The Beatles 1962-1970", it has rare works by Feldman, Tenney, Rzewski, Takemitsu, Sakamoto and some others less notorious.)
This is the perfect gift for someone that loves weird, serious music. Sometimes I leave it on repeat all night because it helps me dream."
