Dextrous yet melodic math rock

"Ahleuchatistas (ah-LOO-cha-TEEST-uhs, the reference being to the classic Charlie Parker bebop tune "Ah-Leu-Cha") are an instrumental gtr-bass-drums trio from Asheville, NC that elicts a pretty formidable "recommended if you like" list: Don Caballero, Minutemen, Captain Beefheart, Lightning Bolt. Perhaps not as mighty as any of them, Ahleuchatistas are still plenty mighty purveyors of lean, driving, punchy "math rock" (as it now seems to be tagged) with their second CD for the Cuneiform label, which specializes in free jazz and other post-avant weirdness. All the complex tempo and time-signature shifts are here, but hey aren't those some tasty melodic fragments popping up throughout too! ("Red-Coated Emergency Exit," "Cup of Substance"). Even works in longer forms ("Prosthetic God," "Take Me to Your Leader" & "Where We Left Off" espesh). "Elegant Proof" has the loose energy of the finest free jazz, where these guys draw much of their fan base, while "K-Bit" is a fits-and-starts sea shanty before finishing off pretty."
Polyrhythm pie

"a curious guitar pick follows the winding wandrings of d boone and steve howe, and a watt admirer digs hard into the allstar polyrhythm pie. the knowing nods of mathematic rock maple strokes search out the new adventures of george hurley. the journey is unpredictable. no singer is found. your mind bends willingly to the stratocastic flavors. pour out the hot tea and honey. sample the savory stew. be astounded by the sound that the NC mountains have found.
rock on, ahleuchatistas."
