"This band has a noble goal - to rerecord every Nintendo song, or at least the nostalgic cool ones. I doubt they'll do versions of, like, Barbie's Horse Riding Bass Fishing Shopathon. I don't know if that's a real game, but you know what I mean. Anyway, they tackle 26 Nintendo covers, some of which you know by heart, the rest faintly familiar: tunes from Megaman, Double Dragon 2, Bubble Bobble, Wizards and Warriors, Super Mario Bros. 2 & 3, Contra, Legend of Zelda, Castlevania 3, Ghosts n' Goblins, and many more. The theme from Goonies 2 was especially cool to hear - I played that game for like two years straight and it's dear to my heart. While the project itself is cheeky in a Moog Cookbook sort of way, the band does a good job in rendering the tunes cool using a live band, but remaining surprisingly loyal."
Agreed, production limits otherwise amazing music

"It's the only reason I can't give the CD four stars, and a real shame since, as another reviewer has mentioned, the mp3's they've hosted on their website (www.theadvantageband.com) are of much better sound quality. Rather than crisp and upbeat, the production on their debut album is unquestionably more muffled and bogged down. The drums especially, which before were clean and solid have inexplicably degraded into an almost unintelligible blur. ALMOST being the key word, as upon close listening, genious clearly shines through. The guitars are as ever crisp, clean and amazing. It's hard to listen to this music and not be completely dumbfounded by the crafstmanship put forth by these guys. Really, really quality stuff. I'd definitely recommend also grabbing the mp3's off of the aformentioned site, as two of the better selections, Megaman 2: Bubbleman stage, and Ducktales, are missing from the album itself."

"the most talented guitar player ive ever seen in my life plays drums on this record. everything the advantage does is so technical and so good. i was lucky enough to see them play live in my home town and it was one of the best shows ive ever seen. i always thought spencer had to play guitar because of the level of skill needed for this music, turns out that they just have two unbelievable guitar players, an equally great bassist and a drummer that is a god damn genius. i dont even think you need to like music to like this record."

"This is a great cd full of memories. If you were a child (or a child at heart) in the 80's you've had to played some of these games wether it be at a friends house or in the comfort of your own living room. The band tried to come up with 26 of the most popular, or best sounding, NES games to remix the songs. They seem to do a great job except for one little flaw I noticed. Of course all of the NES game music was just some little beat repeated a million times, so it's pretty hard to fill up a song's worth of little beat without making it seem too short or too long so what they did is they intersected all the songs so that they sort of flowed together. The only problem with this is that some of the songs just seemed to be cut off (Marble Madness for one). Yes the cd does sound a bit muffled but what people here aren't telling you is that it still sounds great just a little bit more muffled than what was on the website. This CD took me back to simpler times of when I was like 2, the only way to hear more great game music from different titles is to buy this cd so that the Advantage will continue to pump out 80's classics (and some 90's)!"
