"A solid collection of pieces from composers hailing from both the West Coast of the U.S. and Japan, this recording documents Asian influences across a broad spectrum of twentieth-century Western music. From early works like the Cowell, Cage, and Hovhaness to more recent (well..from the 80s, anyway) pieces from Somei Satoh and Lou Harrison, this album is full of enchanting moments and brilliant colors throughout. The Cage and Satoh pieces are my favorites with their explorations of harmonic stasis and tone color, but every work on this recording is a real gem. As always, the Abel/Steinberg/Winant trio delivers a masterful and nuanced performance, reinforcing their reputations as some of our most skilled interpreters of contemporary music. Highly recommended!"
