Strong Sax And Interesting Lyrics!
deepbluereview | SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA USA | 07/22/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you were to search long and hard, you would find very few blues sax players that have released solo recordings. A.C. Reed is one name that may pop up. As of this writing, A.C. is 76 years old and has been playing sax since 1942 when, while working in a Chicago steel mill, he took his first paycheck down to the pawnshop and bought himself his first tenor sax. A.C. was 16 at the time. Over the years A.C. has worked with blues greats including Earl Hooker, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. On this disc, A.C. blows like the Windy City he adopted 60 years ago. As an added plus, he is playing with Albert Collins who plays a killer guitar solo on the into to "Broke Music" and "I Got Mad". There is also some great greasy funk included as well on the tunes "Florine" and "2 Women In A Pick Up Truck". Whether A.C. is singing about eating Junk Food, thanking Jenny Craig for sliming down his woman, getting beat up by his woman or hating his job, it doesn't much matter. He plays and sings with a passion rarely heard anymore. Heck, even A.C.'s cover of the Doors "Roadhouse" sounds fresh and good."

"IF YOU HAVE EVER HEARD "I'M IN THE WRONG BUSINESS" YOU KNOW THE TYPE OF MUSIC A.C.IS CAPABLE OF.THIS CD IS NOT QUITE AS GREAT AS IT IS BUT IT DOES HAVE SEVERAL SONGS OF THE SAME QUALITY.JUNK FOOD IS A GOOD SONG TO START WITH BUT THE GEM OF THE CD IS A SONG CALLED "I GOT MAD" WITH ALBERT COLLINS PLAYING GUITAR.ANYONE WHO KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT THE TWO MEN KNOWS THEY WERE THE BEST OF FRIENDS WHO JUST CLICKED WHEN THEY PLAYED TOGETHER.A.C. IS SIMPLY THE BEST SAX PLAYER TO EVER GET POOR WHILE DOING WHAT HE LOVES WHICH IS MAKE MUSIC.IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A REALLY GOOD CHICAGO BLUES CD THIS IS A MUST FOR YOUR COLLECTION!"

"If you ever get to Chicago, go to Kingston Mines. You will be lucky enough to hear A. C. live. Junk Food, either the studio version or the live version (recorded at the Chicago Blues Festival) is totally awesome."
