CD Reviews

Ricci reigns supreme
Hans U. Widmaier | Elmhurst, IL USA | 11/23/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"A lot of top violin players have recorded the Caprices. That makes Ricci's total supremacy in this repertoire even more astounding. He plays the Caprices faster, more accurately, with better intonation than anyone else who has ever recorded them. In terms of sheer visceral excitement, only Michael Rabin comes close. Rabin's tone is superior to Ricci's: full, round, gorgeous. Tonally, Ricci pays a price for the extreme nimbleness of his bow arm (in order to achieve his technical effects, he has to keep weight off the bow, which makes the tone smaller). But Ricci compensates with his palpable joy in his total control of the instrument, his almost childlike delight in his ludicrous physical abilities. I often laugh out loud at Ricci's incomprehensible feats. If you don't believe me, just check out the sample track of Caprice #5 and compare it to, say, Perlman. The difference is mind-boggling."
They dont play like that no-mo..

"Ricci is a prime example of coupling intonation with musicality and style. I was lucky enough to have heard this violinist in person and now that I have discovered his playing on the Internet, I am absoloutely thrilled! His technical execution is second to none, it all seems to flow from him with the greatest of ease. The intonation is superb and is perfectly enabling the overtones to ring. As you know, some notes on a string instrument have more sympathetic overtones than others and Ricci is making up for the notes which have less sympathetic vibrations by vibrating them more. I reccommend this CD highly to any music lover and anyone who admires hard work and high results."
