Nocturne for piano in C sharp minor (doubtful), KK Anh.Ia/6
There is no single right way to play Chopin's music but there are certainly wrong ways. Here is one of them. Chopin once demonstrated proper rubato (flexible rhythm) to a student by breathing gently on a candle. "This is ... more »my rubato," he said. Then he blew the candle out. "This is yours." The late Andrzej Wasowski was a candlesnuffer; no matter how sensitively he may play some passages, his performances lack basic rhythm resulting in some of the worst Chopin playing I have ever heard. Moravec (Nonesuch) and Rubinstein (RCA) have given us far superior versions of this music. --Leslie Gerber« less

"One good reason to have Wasowski's CD is to challenge strange (if not ridiculous!) review of Leslie Gerber. I've followed this path, and ordered it. And...? This is definitely one of the three best renditions of Chopin 'Nocturnes' available! Leslie Gerber probably was listening to completely other recording. Wasowski's interpretation is poetic, sometimes melancholic and mesmerizing, technically clear and perfect. Simply very inspired performance. "Candlesnuffer"??? Oh, my God. I'd rather say that Wasowski precisely realizes in practice Chopin's advice from the anecdote. Wasowski feels the very roots of Chopin music, knows it's background and context. Shares most of emotions ... another Pole on exile... Anyway, ignore Leslie Gerber's warning, this disc is a real MUST! Additionally to Rubinstein, and - of course - Moravec. This is my Big Three. Enjoy."
Wasowski brings a whole new dimension to Chopin

"Mr. Wasowski gives the most emotional performance of the Chopin Nocturnes I've ever heard. He plays them with a sensitivity, flexibility (in the best sense of the word) and depth that brings these pieces to a new level of beauty. I highly recommend these to Chopin lovers, this recording adds another dimension to these wonderful and timeless pieces. As a matter of fact I would almost go as far to say that until you've heard this recording you haven't heard the emotional potential of these pieces."
"This is the kind of Chopin that I've wished for all this while. I certainly enjoy Rubinstein, Moravec (just nice, but I would love a bit more rubato), Arrau, Ashkenazy (rather heavy-handed at times) etc. but this is special...it speaks to my heart more than the rest. Must buy, especially if you collect Chopin. This is my 6th set and favourite. What a ridiculous review by Amazon.com. Hats off to the late Wasowski!"
Wasowski is Chopin

"I'm not giving Wasowski's recording of the Nocturnes five stars just because I studied with the Maestro for four years, but during those four years, I listened to Wasowski play just about everything Chopin ever wrote, and I have never heard live or in a recording anyone who can match the touch and heart that Wasowski had for Chopin's music. In my four years of study with him, while working on my Bach. Degree in Music, I learned more about music from him than in any classroom studies I had to take. My only regret is that he really never had the chance, because of the war and what the Communists did to him and his family in Poland and the ferocity of trying to find a country to make a home for his wife, Maria, and two children, that he never had the chance to become a world known pianist. Time Magazine called him the world's greatest interpreter of Chopin and Henryk Szeryng concurred. The world lost one of music's greatest pianists, and so very few people know that. It's very sad. Wonderful, though you *really* should hear the Mazurkas

"Given the choice of Wasowski's two available recordings, head straight for the Mazurkas, which is possibly the most entrancing modern recording of those elegant dances. Pick up the Wasowski Mazurkas and you will find yourself transported directly to Chopin's salon. This recording of the Nocturnes is wonderful, though not as definitive as Ivan Moravec's classic set from 1966.Amazon critic has made a foolish mini-career of dismissing Wasowski, so pay heed of the other customer reviews and experiment with this very-good-sounding recording."
