CD Reviews

Herbert Blomstedt 1998-2005 Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra
Hubert S. Mickel | 01/29/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This set of 5 CD's is not for everybody. It is for those who are well acquainted with Herbert Blomstedt and with his insistence on authenticity and perfection. In this collection, all played by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra at a time it was reaching a pinnacle of performance perfection. It is an orchestra that still has the earthy sounds to the strings, but which plays with a perfection previously only associated with the Dresden Staatskapelle. There is a performance of Beethoven's Fifth, Brahms' Second, Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto in D Minor, Mendelssohn's Symphony in A Minor, Bruckner's Third as well as others by Hiller, Nielsen, and Matthus. What is consistently noted is that all of the pieces are played as they were written and the performances are either the very best or one of the best available. That is the legacy of Herbert Blomstedt.

I heard Herbert Blomstedt conduct Brahms Third Symphony in the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig on May 9, 2007. It was the finest performance of that symphony that I have heard. At the end, I wanted to give Blomstedt a standing ovation, but there was no one else standing. I did not stand either. I was intimidated by my clear recognition of the sophistication of the Leipzig public in attendance. I regret that I did not cast my vote in a manner that might have counted, rather than write about it later.

I stated that these CD's are not for everybody. However, if you enjoy excellence, and enjoy the full robust sound of what may now very well be considered the world's greatest orchestra, conducted by one of the very few best conductors in the world, this set is for you."
