(4 out of 5 stars)
"Three discs,73,74,58 minutes each approximately. The sound is good considering that the recordings are from private tapes or recorded off the radio. At times the instruments sound a bit on the flat side and a bit distant. Saying the above, don't think this will be an exercise in listening where one becomes tired and gets no enjoyment from these tracks. Audiophiles, whose main concern is sound quality might have a differing opinion. If you're a listener of live recordings of older material, these recordings fit somewhere in the middle quality -wise.
The concerts (including one bonus track with a quartet)were played in England,Sweden, and Germany. The collective players are:J.J.Johnson and Kai Winding-trombones,Lee Konitz-alto sax,Zoot Sims-tenor sax,Phineas Newborn Jr. and Red Garland-pianos,Oscar Pettiford-bass,and Kenny Clarke-drums. Be aware that the groups on these tracks are a combination of the above players-they don't play as an octet. The tunes are either written by jazz contemporaries or are standards which have stood the test of time. The group is somewhat unusual in that it's leaders were the two trombonists, both of whom were in their prime and had become fairly well known individually. Combined with top-notch players noted above, the music has a swing and depth which leads to good jazz-as simple as that.
There is a good mix of up-tempo tracks and ballads which keeps this set moving along. Interspersed throughout the tracks are either "announcers" voices or one of the actual musicians introducing the next tune. This gives this set more of a "you are there" feel-whether in the concert hall or huddled around the radio, like in the old days when jazz was broadcast live over the airwaves.
The enclosed booklet is informative, with quotes from Johnson and Winding and an overview of the music. One of the best things is that each track has information as to who is the featured soloist/soloists. If you like jazz trombone or small group jazz, this set belongs in your collection. I purchased this on a "whim",hoping the sound wasn't too bad-I was surprised at the quality. Now it sits alongside the JAZZ AT THE PHILHARMONIC sets and other live recordings in the same vein. This should be more well known-pick it up before it's to late."
