All Prokofiev ballets: Chout, The Steel Step, The Prodigal Son, Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, On the Dnieper and The Tale of the Stone Flower are featured on CDs. The bonus recording of the second suite from Romeo and Juliet conducted by none other but the composer himself (!) is a principal ornament to the set. This unique historic phonographic document is arguably the only preserved recording of Prokofiev the conductor made in 1938 with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. Prokofievs ballets are performed by the USSR Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra, the Big Symphony Orchestra of All-Union Radio and the USSR Ministry of Culture Symphony Orchestra all conducted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky, a recognized interpreter of 20th century music and ardent advocate of Prokofievs music.
