Product DescriptionHerbert von Karajan was one of the greatest conductors of all time, and although primarily associated with the Berlin Philharmonic and Deutsche Grammophon, he made a number of outstanding recordings at the beginning of his career for Decca with the Vienna Philharmonic, many of which are included in this set.
Among the many highlights of this collection are perennial favorites such as Holsts The Planets, Tchaikovskys Romeo and Juliet and music from Griegs Peer Gynt, together with the last two symphonies of Mozart.
Ballet music features strongly with a whole CD devoted to highlights from Tchaikovskys three masterpieces, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty, while a further CD includes highlights from Adams delightful Giselle.
The final CD brings more ballet, this time courtesy of Deutsche Grammophon and the Berlin Philharmonic, including the uproarious arrangement of Offenbachs music in Gaite parisienne, the bitter-sweet charm of Chopins Les Sylphides, and the ballet music from Gounods Faust.
