Another Dorati/Mercury winner

(5 out of 5 stars)

"One of the few sure bets that I've found in recorded music is this: if you like the composer or the work, and if it's available in the Mercury Living Presence series, you probably need search no further. Indeed, I am told that the original vinyl Mercury platters are much in demand by old-fashioned audiophiles, and can easily fetch a few hundred dollars in a used record record. You, of course, can spend much less and enjoy the music the thoroughly modern way via CD.This CD is up to the usual standards of Antal Dorati and the Mercury label. Brilliant sound, soulful playing, a wonderful experience. In the light music corner, add this to your Paul Paray selections."

"Antal Dorati was so famous as a ballet conductor that it should be no surprise that he excels at waltzes. This is one of the finest collections of Viennese Music ever issued. Nothing is overdone or exaggerated. The performances by the Philhamonia Hungarica are pointed and delicately etched, but with a reserve of power and virility. The other performances, by the Minneapolis Symphony, are perhaps a bit less authentic sounding but even more suave and musical. The sound engineering is very good, although a bit veiled by the high standards of Mercury Living Presence. In sum, this is a collection to set beside your Willi Boskovsky albums in its joy and authenticity."
