A Leader Of The "Progressive Jazz" Sound Among Big Bands
09/25/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is but one volume of the massive Time-Life "mail order only" Big Band series of a couple of decades ago which covered all the early greats, and if you can get your hands on one of these Stan Kenton editions at the price being shown, go for it. Fast while they last.

The sound reproduction is just excellent and in the fold-out insert you get 2 1/2 pages on his career and another 2 1/2 pages providing comments on each of the recordings included by the late Boston-born Richard M. (Dick) Sudhalter, a noted jazz trumpeter and music critic. Also, there is a complete discography of the contents, including musicians involved, which range from 1943 to 1951.

The tracks (with the year recorded shown in brackets and vocalist, chart performance - if nothing is shown it did not chart - and label numbers, where applicable) are: 1) The Peanut Vendor - Dec 6, 1947 - Capitol 15032; 2) Southern Scandal - May 4, 1945 - Capitol 202 - flip of Tampico; 3) Eager Beaver - Nov. 19, 1943 - Capitol 159 - flip of Artistry In Rhythm; 4) He's Funny That Way - June 7, 1946 with vocal by June Christy - Capitol 10184; 5) Painted Rhythm - Oct 30, 1945 - Capitol 250; 6) Intermission Riff - Jan 14, 1946 - Capitol 298; 7) Come Back To Sorrento - June 4, 1946 - Capitol 20086; 8) Machito - March 31, 1947 - Capitol 15194; 9) Willow Weep For Me - July 25, 1946 with vocal by June Christy - Capitol 20087; 10) Lover - March 31, 1947 - Capitol 15031; 11) Artistry In Rhythm - Nov 19, 1943 - Capitol 159 # 16 Nov 1944; 12) And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine - May 20, 1944 with vocal by Anita O'Day - Capitol 166 - # 4 Oct 1944; 13) Cuban Carnival - Dec 6, 1947 - Capitol 10124; 14) I Told Ya I Love Ya, Now Get Out - Oct 22, 1947 with vocal by June Christy - Capitol 15018 - # 26 Jan 1948; 15) How High The Moon - Dec 21, 1947 with vocal by June Christy - Capitol 15117 - # 20 July 1948; 16) Opus In Pastels - Aug 2, 1946 - Capitol 20088; 17) Artistry In Tango - March 20, 1951 - Capitol 1480 - flip of September Song; 18) Travellin' Man - Jan 16, 1945 with vocal by Anita O'Day - Capitol 48012; 19) Artistry Jumps - Oct 30, 1945 - Capitol 229 - # 13 Feb 1946; Tampico - May 4, 1945 with vocal by June Christy & the band - Capitol 202 - # 3 Aug 1945; 21) Concerto To End All Concertos - July 26, 1946 - Capitol 382."
