CD Reviews

For Disco And Techo Whizzes Only
Martin A Hogan | San Francisco, CA. (Hercules) | 05/08/2004
(3 out of 5 stars)

""Love's Divine" is arguably, one of the most beautiful and well crafted songs Seal has done to date. In fact, producer Trevor Horn did a remarkable job on Seal IV with his production. However, this CD-single is only for techno whizzes or disco lovers. The original album version is not here. Of the five mixes, the "Passenger Radio Mix" is the most faithful, but the others are variations on the theme with some (actually good) remixes with the standard dance beat."
Love's Divine, Not These Remixes...

"During their promo campaign for his Human Beings project Warner Bros. chose to ignore the fact that it was indeed the club contingent ("Killer", "Crazy") that had originally embraced Seal before handing him over to the mainstream. A big mistake it proved to be since the album came and went without a trace. However, not a mistake in vein, as Seal IV proved to be the return of the vital artist with its onstaught of club/dance promo. When was the last time an artist had two commercial maxis simultaneously on the shelves? "Waiting For You" and "Get It Together" both proved to be massive hits while bringing Seal back to the consciousness of the record buying public. With that in mind, "Love's Divine" comes as the album third club offering and frankly its have-it-done-by-five feel of the track's remixes are quite a disappointment. None of the work featured here by The Passengerz, Deepsky, and Murk does anything to retain the beauty of this ballad. Closest comes Murk's Light-N-Lovely Mix, but still the song is bogged down with heavy beats and clumsy electronica, which is even more annoyingly so in Deepsky's Club Mix. During this far too overextended eight plus minutes Seal's warm-as-velvet vocal is mistakenly reduced to swatches pasted onto the mixer's uninspired instrumental. I guess the days of having such colorful, capable, and abundant remix talent like Junior Vasques, Soul Solution, Thunderpuss, and HQ2 (among others) to choose from are over for the--let's hope--time being. Finding an appropriate mixer for a pop song looking to crossover has become a sporadic affair these days, as many club offerings are too beat driven and harshly overworked with much disregard to the song's original integrity, and ignored are valid, new perspective for re-worked songs. I really would have loved to have heard what BT, Bent, The Scumfrog, Phunk Investigation, or even the discofied Love To Infinity team would have come up with for "Love's Divine"; the mixers chosen really failed to bring this superb song to another (or at least equal) level."
Third remix winner from Seal.

"This is the 3rd release from the latest Seal cd and this time the track "Love's Divine" is the release. On the heals of the 2 major Club Hits- "Get It Together" and "Waiting For You"- Warner Brothers once again puts out a maxi cd single with some great remixes. The cd comes with 3 set of remixers taking the song from hard underground house to almost light nrg house. The mixes are:
1- Deepsky Club Mix (8:48)-- a almost dub mix
2- The Passengerz Sanctuary Club Mix(8:55)
3- The Passengerz Radio Mix(3:56) - both good mixes
4- Murk Light-N- Lovely Mix(7:38)-almost a nrg house mix-not as dubby/tribal as their own stuff(a lovely mix almost as good as their work with Todd Terry With Shannon on "It's Over Love")
5- Murk Dark-N-Dirty Dub(8:44)- TRIBAL mix!!!!!
I don't quite understand Club Dj's now obsession with Seal now but when you get three winners in a row you can see how. Excellent yet again.Seal sounds so beautiful on these remixes."
