"Although this opera was composed at a time when Rossini was churning out some of his best work, Torvaldo e Dorliska is not an outstanding opera. Few numbers really can catch fire and it is indicative that the extent to which Rossini later used this opera as a quarry for use in other operas is comparatively limited, though some of the best pieces did later show up in other works. Unfortunately, the cast, orchestra, chorus and conducting in this recording are hardly more than adequate, so that it never really produces excitement or even many memorable moments. It is however, apparently the only cd of the opera that is available. (I haven't seen the DVD yet.)"
