Mariah Carey : The Butterfly's Best
CHEWIE | 02/10/2010
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Call me crazy but "Butterfly" is one of my favorite albums of all time. Her first few albums were good but this is by far her best. It was recorded while Mariah's marriage was falling apart. This is what most of the lyrics deal with but a few suprises come along the way. Mariah also sings about feeling left out as a child and growing up too fast.

Honey - One of Mariah's many great #1s! I love the cute lyrics and has appeal to both hip hop and pop fans. 5/5 Stars

Butterfly - It is a shame that this was only an airplay single because it could of easily been another #1. The backup singers really steal the show here and the lyrics are about Mariah letting her husband go. 5/5 Stars

My All - Another huge #1 hit. Mariah uses her beautiful voice but doesn't go over the top like on Vision of Love or Fantasy. She does lets the lyrics carry her on - and that isn't a bad thing! 5/5 Stars

The Roof - This is single worthy! Mariah is daydreaming about a past romance... maybe about her ex husband? 4/5 Stars

Fourth of July - Pleasent filler that would of fit better on Daydream. Still, nothing bad but feels like "The Roof" rehash almost. 3.5/5 Stars

Breakdown - With one exception (I'll explain later) this is my favorite Mariah tune. It is about her marriage falling apart and not being in love anymore. Instead of facing it she tries to hide her feelings. 5/5 Stars

Babydoll - This song is actually pretty experimental and is up their with her best work. I love the back up singers. "I wanna be your babydoll..." This is a sadly looked over gem. 5/5 Stars

Close My Eyes - A shocking song that is about Mariah's childhood. She didn't know where she fit in and feels she grew up too soon. 5/5 Stars

Whenever You Call - Eh. This is something I usually like to skip over. Not that interesting and too repitive. 2.5/5

The Beautiful Ones - Now this is my favorite Mariah song. Prince is my favorite artist of all time but she perfects this. I love how it is a duet. 5/5 Stars

Outside - Another Mariah "childhood" type song. Similar to Close My Eyes but just as good. A great album closer. 5/5 Stars

In conclusion, this is by far Mariah Carey's greatest album. Mariah even says it is her favorite. I'd highly reccomend it to haters and fans. Haters would be shocked but fans love it of course.

4.5/5 Stars
