CD ReviewsTerrific collection of essential Nilsson albums although I w Wayne Klein | My Little Blue Window, USA | 07/31/2010 (4 out of 5 stars) "It's a pity that the pop music world has forgotten about Harry Nilsson. An amazing singer, talented songwriter and all around trouble maker in the 70's, I got this collection for Father's Day and while I had many of these in other release I liked having a good sounding version of "Aerial Pandomonium Ballet" that also had bonus tracks.
The sound quality is quite good and, unlike the recent Japanese remasters, they aren't harshly compressed, with little to no dynamic range. They sound quite natural and, although some of these may have had No Noise applied to them, minus that minor flaw they sound quite good. The titles "Nilsson Schmilsson", "Schmilsson in the Night" and "Son of Nilsson" all reflect the U.S. releases and sound quite good and, I'm assuming, were remastered by Vic Asini like those titles were. They feature all the bonus tracks and are in mini-album sleeves (although Sony COULD have put some mylar sleeves inside so they wouldn't get scratched from taking them out and putting them in). For "Schmilsson in the Night" the back is in color like the original LP release back in the day. "Harry" sounds quite good (I haven't compared it to the DCC to see if it uses the exact same mastering as the one that Steve Hoffman did or not but the bonus tracks are the same). I do wish this had come with a booklet with all the album credits (the print is naturally quite small), lyrics and the CD notes written by Curtis Armstrong (on the back of the CD it states that the album credits can be downloaded and read online--they aren't there) but aside from that this is a fine collection that includes some of Harry's finest albums." |
