CD Reviews

Not just another Peer Gynt.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"One of the finest versions of Peer Gynt on CD. A warm and idiomatic interpretation from a fellow Scandanavian, Conductor Paavo Berglund and the Bournemouth Symphony.

The warm, highly atmospheric and Very realistically balanced Superb 1974 analog recording brings a glowing allure to this often played score, which many conductors often miss. Especially in the beautiful "Morning Mood" which most orchestras take too fast. Here the speed is slower than most which makes it as serene as a new morning. Dynamically setting up everything else that follows.

The Symphonic Dances are also perhaps the finest on CD. Lots of color, energy and high spirit and again a superb recorded sound. Everything about this CD stands with the best of Grieg out there and probably closer to what Grieg had in mind than the Jarvi or Blomstedt versions. The only equal of this Peer Gynt is Fjelstad and The LSO from 1958.

A Highly recommended first choice."
