CD Reviews

Clean, uncluttered and forceful
Dr.D.Treharne | Exeter, Devon, United Kingdom | 10/26/2001

"A really excellent album from David Sanchez. Based around augmenting a basic trio of Sanchez (Tenor Sax throughout) Hans Glawischnig (Bass), Antonio Sanchez (drums) the album has forceful contributions from Edsel Gomez on piano and Miguel Zenon on alto sax. The material is an eclectic mixture of material written by Sanchez and Zenon through Wayne Shorters "Prince of Darkness" - a great opener- to Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler's "Ill wind". The album programme works well, but stand out tracks for me are Zenon's " Joyful" with some added percussion, and Sanchez's "Karla's changes". This is a particularly good example of how well Sanchez and Zenon complement each others playing. The sound is very precise, clean and when it needs to be, mellow. Gomez also fits well into the overall sound, particularly effective on "River Tales". " Peace for Vieques" an extended piece also includes Pernell Saturmino's Puerto Rican rainforest effects. This is a full on David Sanchez extended jazz album which deserves a wide audience, and proves how effective he is within the small group setting. Listen to this soon!"
Solid tenor

"If you don't know the David Sanchez sound, I suggest you get aquatinted - this guy is gonna be around a long time. Usually heavy on the Latin (Cuban) rhythms - this album is more straight-ahead than the others, and even a little beyond with the trio work. The group as a whole works well with each other, and makes for a very good album - maybe even his best yet?"
Traveis his best yet

"With TRAVESIA David has absolutely pulled it all together. Sound, feeling, composition and technique are all amazing. His rendition of ILL WIND is superb as is his orginal song KARLA'S CHANGES...a swooping climbing/diving revelry that revelas something new everytime I listen to it. I have followed David Sanchez' development as a tenor player since his firt release THE DEPARTURE. He was always an interesting technician on the horn but now there are so many more levels. Can't wait until the next one."
