CD Reviews

Should be in the collection of every J Strauss Jnr admirer.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"The great value of Marco Polo's J Strauss Jnr Edition is nowhere better typified than here. Add this to your collection and instead of yet another 'An der schönen, blauen Donau' you'll gain a full CD of works you have probably never heard before. For one reason or another, many of them have survived only in published piano scores, and we have largely to thank the recording's conductor Christian Pollack for the orchestrations heard here. In addition to the waltzes, polkas and quadrilles, there are two concert items not conceived as dance music. Concerning one of them, which he termed a tone poem, Strauss wrote to his brother Eduard in 1896, 'The way I spend my time now is very comical. You see I can now act and do as I please.' As with most volumes in this series, Slovakian musicians and recording venues are used, Viennese born conductor Christian Pollack here ensuring that performances all have an apparently authentic style."
