Synopsis

When last we saw Courtney Love, she was performing on the silver screen and posing for Versace, a far cry from her formative days stumbling across stages wearing ripped thrift-store clothing. But Love's Hollywood transformation is just the latest in her crusade for adoration, whatever the environment. And Celebrity Skin is just the latest manifestation of that obsession. Instead of screaming in rage over a muscular din of power chords, Love sings in a restrained, melodic alto voice; the band matches the euphony with rhythms and hooks that draw from such mainstream acts as Fleetwood Mac, the Go-Go's, and, of course, Smashing Pumpkins, whose frontman, Billy Corgan, cowrote five songs. What makes Celebrity Skin more than another good rock album, however, is Love's lyrics, which remain confessional and scathing, addressing such topics as physical abuse ("Hit So Hard"), drugs ("Use Once and Destroy"), the music industry ("Awful," "Boys on the Radio"), and her late husband's suicide ("Reasons to Be Beautiful"). If nothing else, Celebrity Skin is proof to all the skeptics that superstars have feelings, too. --Jon Wiederhorn

Mixed feelings; as much as I liked it there is no one song that tears me up; they all really fit the style but all seem a little more the same than I expect....

I bought this along time ago for one song and never really listened to it much. I think maybe it just wasn't my kinda thing.

CD Reviews

A worthy if a bit poppy successor to Live Through This.

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Although hard "riot grrl" fans dissed Celebrity Skin when it was released, it was and remains one of the great grunge-era albums by any band. With lyrically accessible and audibly pleasing songs as "Malibu" and "Boys on the Radio" (a reworking of Love's Sugar Coma apparently with signficant help by Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins) to introspect ballads as "Awful" and "Reasons to be Beautiful" CS was a departure from Live Through This. Indeed the irony of being "sell outs" wasn't lost on Love; "Boys on the Radio" is often considered an indictment of the record industry and its handling of musicians, while "Playing Your Song" pointedly discusses the very "selling out" that fans of Hole so vehemently accused the album of being the prime example. Yet, its continued sales is a testament to its place in the recent history of music, of whatever persuasion. In addition to the one CD versions, a number of two-CD import sets were made, with live tracks from Australia and the U.K."
Good album

"this album was a good pick. Love is sure good at sounding like/impersonating her late ex."
